I have just acquired an old boat. I posted a little while about this but didn't receive any replies so I am going to update my findings.
The motor is a 1984 Mariner 115 inline 6. With muffs on the motor seems to work normally... forward, neutral, and reverse are all working, the prop is turning etc., however, when i bring it to the lake I can only move the boat in reverse. When I shift it into forward the gear box clicks but does not engage.
Another thing that I have noticed is that I am able to turn the prop, without fighting engine compression, when the motor is in forward. In reverse when I turn the prop I can also here the compression exhausting.
Is this a factor of the shifter being out of adjustment? Any suggestions on what to look for?
