1982 Evinrude 140hp water pipe grommet

Greetings,

I acquired a 1982 Evinrude 140 hp v4 on the cheap. I pulled the lower unit and there is no water pipe grommet between the water pump outlet and the uptake pipe. My 35 hp has one so I am wondering if this engine is missing its grommet or if it does not need one.

Also, any tips for reconnecting the shift linkage? It was terrible to get off and I am dreading putting it back together.

There should be a grommet (part #0320943).
