1979 johnson 55 hp.

question was running along at 4,000 rpm,motor rev up ,and jump up also, boat will not move.
prop will move about one inch each way in gear.any answers

The lower units on those were not cosidered to be " robust "---------------------Sounds like the pinion gear or perhaps the clutch dog broke.------------------Not uncommon !!

when motor is turn off and put in forward gear -turning prop counter clockwise you hear a noise then prop stops- in reverse turning clock wise same thing
