1977 115HP Tilt/Trim motor replacement advice

Hi all,

My tilt/trim motor may have an intermittent fault (it could also be the switch/wiring etc), however given it is only intermittent it is somewhat challenging to diagnose.

The workshop manual I have isn't particular helpful in terms of steps needs to replace the tilt/trim motor should that prove to be the problem. A quick look would seem to indicate I need to:

- Support the bottom end of the motor so the load is taken off the tilt piston
- Remove the pin connecting the tilt piston to the motor
- Remove the entire tilt/trim manifold by removing a number of screws either side of the brackets
- Replace the tilt trim motor
- Top up oil level?

It looks like I'd also need a single o-ring under the tilt trim motor.

Is there a bunch more work that would need to be done?

Much appreciated as always,

Nick.

Trace the electric motor wires back to it's nylon connector and disconnect it. Check for salt corrosion, clean as needed.

Now you can run battery jumper wires directly to the electric motor electrical connector to check the electric motor,

And at the same time, use a ohm meter to check the performance of the PTT switch.

Could this unit have an internal thermal relay in the motor? My 1975 had a similar issue where the relay could be heard click when it reset. Seems like it would take a minute or so to reset.
