1976 penn yen tunnel drive has merc crusiers i no nothing about tunnel drives are they good or bad ? Any help would be great thanks bcclew

Great for shallow running but never caught on. Being a 1976 Penn Yan boats were nice and sadly many of that vintage have some construction issues. If you are considering the boat PLEASE check the stringer's below the decking. The other small but tolerable issue is the drive shaft packing depending if it ia a salt water history or fresh water boat.

If it's in good condition I would say go for it. Engines were very easy to work on due to the accessibility to them.

One more item of concern,

Older boats used fiberglass gas tanks. there is a issue with the alcohol in the fuel that pulls molocules out of the resins and clings to the valves.

Big discussion last year here about this and a very seriuos problem.

So if the tanks are fiberglass they HAVE to be replaced!!
