This motor is very hard start

This motor is very hard starting and stalls when trying to put it in gear most of the time. When it gets going it runs very strong but one cylinder cuts in and out.Thankyou in advance JOHN

" Link/Sync, Check spark plugs

" Link/Sync, Check spark plugs, squeeze the primer bulb and look for fuel leaks around carbs and fuel pump (old fuel hose). I believe that that motor has a temperature controlled choke (pretty advanced for its day) that can be overridden with a three way lever on the carb rack. Set it on "manual choke" on the next cold start-up and see if that helps. If everything is set where it belongs and it still has a shitty idle, the carbs could probably use a little freshening-up. " Always start by checking compression and spark on all cylinders. Maybe it's only carburetion. Sounds like it runs good once you get it going, but losing a cylinder sounds like an electrical problem. "

" Check compression ,these motors were famous for broken piston rings. Remove bypass covers and inspect pistons. They must spin over rapidly for the ignition to work. A good battery and good starter are a must. "
