I am trying to drop the lower unit to install a water pump. I'm having trouble locating the linkage pin. I'm not what one would consider a top boat mechanic. I've tried to watch numerous videos but now I think I'm more confused than I was before I started. Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Remove cowling.-----Look in an area under the starter motor.-----7/16" socket in 1/4" drive should do it.-----Remove the horizontal one that goes through the shift rod.

I appreciate you responding. I'm facing the back of the boat. The starter is on the left side. I guess I'm not seeing what you're talking about.

Look below the starter.----Near the bottom carburetor.----Still confused , then have your assistant slowly move control to forward.----You will then see what needs to be done.
