1972 50 horse Evinrude outboard model # 50273C.

When I put shift to reverse it blows inline fuse. I'm assuming it's a bad solenoid. Do you have suggestions as to how to troubleshoot.

Not likely the solenoid.---It could be a bare wire somewhere.-------But find the connecters on the wires going into the lower unit.----Slide back the rubber boots.----Disconnect the wires.----Take ohm readings on each wire , green to ground.----And blue ( reverse ) to ground.-----Report your readings.

Green wire to ground 4.45 ohms
Blue wire to ground 12.6 ohms.
