1970 johanson 9.5 / gas

I have a 1970 9.5 hp. Johanson yesterday I went for a boat ride and after about 1/2 hr. it started to act up, it would start running out of gas at any speed. when it would quit you would have to choke it to get it running again it would run for about 3 to 5 min. then quit again, could the tank have any thing to do with this or should I put a new fuel pump on , is there any way to check the fuel pump

I forgot to say that if you pumped the bulb it would run good for 3 to 5 min. then act up then pump bulb then good again that is why wondering about fuel pump or tank
 
Easy to determine if it is a bad fuel pump !!---------------You operate the " manual fuel pump " on the hose and see how the motor behaves.-------------If it then keeps running , then the pump on the motor is suspect.---------------------You have of course checked that it is cooling properly , when was a new impeller installed in the waterpump ???
