Hello,
Could someone explain what the reverse lock push-rod and cam do, exactly? I know the push-rod rides the cam slope, but what does the other end connect to?
I don't believe my motor has the push-rod. I've had the lower unit off twice and never saw it. So is this a safety feature I can operate without, or do I need it?

The reverse lock operates when the motor is in neutral or reverse. The rod rides up the cam and pushes hooks over a bar to prevent the motor kicking up out of the water when in reverse.
Pic of the hooks. Disregard the rust, I have replaced with a PTT

Ahh, thank you for the pic and explanation. You really don't get the whole system from the parts diagrams.

So it's necessary for proper operation, but doesn't prevent the unit from going in or out of reverse when not there.

If I had tilt & trim I wouldn't need it, would I?
