1969 Johnson 40hp electramatic water pump

How do I replace the imperllar in this boat. It is in immaculate condition and I need to replace the water pump on account of it having not been ran in bout 9 years. Im told theres wiring running down the lower unit and that these wires will have to be cut and respliced in order to replace the water pump. That just doesnt seem right to me. Any help would be appreciated. Thanks.

Step # 1 is to remove the back part of the lower cowling about 14 bolts I think.---If long shaft you also need remove that lower cowling 5" spacer ----You will then see the wires going to the lower unit.-----Remove the outside cover.-----Then remove the wee cover that the wires go through.-----Little oil on wires help.-----Remove 7 bolts that hold lower unit on.-----Attach something to the wires so that wire can be pulled up.-----Rest is easy.----Use factory impeller.
