1968 johnson wont shift out of reverse

Ihave 1963 40hp johnson seahorse that is stuck in reverse and wont shift either shifter or cable disconnected and manually shifted to forward or reverse.Before forword and neutral was only thing that did work.Any help please????????? David It is 1963 not a 1968

pull the small covers off the side and check if shifter rod is moving up and down.----------------Maybe there is something wrong at the connecter found there.

Yes it shifts to all 3 positions.

Are you saying that the connecter halfway between the powerhead and the lower unit goes up and down !!----------If that is a " yes " than the lower unit needs to come off and needs to be taken apart , remove 1 bolt from connector and the seven screws from the exhaust housing that hold the lower unit on .

Also need to remove the back half of the lower cowling.

I can see only see the long brass coupler.I would appreciate anything you could find to help me.Thankyou

Is there also another brass coupler to adjust beside the upper one?

when you say connecter are talking brass coupler?then after taking out 7 screws the lower unit plus connecting rod will just come off?
