1967 6HP Rude manual starter

I replaced the rope as described in the service manual by putting a pair of pliers under the pinion to hold it in the up position while replacing the rope. When I secured the new rope the starter assembly recoiled the rope once and the second time I pulled on it ,it would not retract. Can I please have some insight on this? I have a FSM. Thanks-B

I got it,I must have turned the starter the wrong way at some point and unhooked the spring from the retainer.Disassembled and reassembled per the FSM.
