1965 mercury 39

Wanting to change the TOP oil seal vertical drive shaft
just above the impeller. I measure the shaft dia about
.45 and dia of old seal about .84.
Parts list calls for #38 serria i.d seal at .500 (this would
not fit) .45.
However, #29 seal numbers look correct for what I
need.
Oem mercury does not indicate dimensional size just
the serria one does.
Can I assume the oem is correct anyway?

The 39, 40, 45 all take the same oil seal Merc P/N 26-30900 for the .456" driveshaft diameter. How is the rust in the seal area on your driveshaft? That was the main reason for the seal failure on the non-stainless steel drive shafts
