1964 merc 500 thermostat

I was wondering if anyone knows if there is a way to install a thermostat on a 1964 merc 500. Motor is not made with a housing for one but I'm curious if there is a way to bipass the cooling water through an external thermostat

May seem stupid but the water in the fall up here causes the engine to run cold, l it's of fuel. Just curious if there was a simple process. Engines do like a certain temp range

They ran like that when they were new and it was cold.
