1960s 40hp lower units

I have two lower units for my '63 Big Twin 40. One may have originally come off a Johnson but appears to be about the same year based on the parts diagram for my motor. It has a broken fin at the top rear. The other is older, I'm guessing, and does not have the water bypass screen and cover, just a single small hole on the side. The water pump is also configured differently on this older LU. It has only a single water pipe going up to the power head and a second very short pipe connects down to the water intake.

First, what vintage motor does that older unit come from?

Second, how does the cooling system work with only a single tube going up? I mean, how does the water flow before the thermostat opens?

Last, I'd rather not have to take the newer LU and have it welded. I've stuck so much money into this thing already that I'm really choking on having to drop another $50 (or more) to fix that. Will it have any detrimental effect to just run it as is? I'd rather be able to use this unit than the older one.

Thanks!
