1949 Johnson TD-20 reassembling lower unit

Hi everyone, I recently pulled the lower unit of my 1949 Johnson TD-20 off and drained the lower unit fluid. I was wondering if I should put grease on the drive shaft ( I know I need to put grease on the splines) since it has a sleeve around it that rests on the upper gear case. I think the oil should climb up it because of the Weissenberg effect but I'm not certain.

Ok. should I wait for all of the oil to drain from the lower unit? also how would I change the impeller in the lower unit?

Weissenberg effect. Wow, I learned new word today. And what it means.

Impeller is forward of the propeller. Simply remove the prop, and pump cover.

Oh its as easy as that. What’s the part number for the impeller?

Brilliant engineering.....the pump is down where it belongs. My 1949, 1950, 1951, and 52, still have original pumps....I have even made my own pumps for these.....Weisennwhat?

How do I make sure the water pump goes tube goes into the right place?
