✅ Yamaha 9.9 hard start & bogs down and dies

I have a 9.9 Yamaha 4 cycle outboard motor with electric start. The motor stays on my boat that’s on a mooring in salt water and has always started immediately and run perfectly in the last four years I have owned it. Last week I started it (with choke) and it started immediately but wouldnt idle for very long before dying. Tried to start a few more times and got the same results or it would just crank over without ever starting.

Should I start by replacing the fuel filter? (Existing fuel filter is two years old.)

Possibly water in fuel? Have you tried running Seafoam or another brand of fuel treatment that will “burn” any moisture? Fresh fuel?

That’s probably a good idea but I need to get it running before I can do that.
