"Hello to all, I am new to the group but been around boats for years, this is my first I/O ,I just bought a 76 California 18 Ft fish/ski volvo B20 270 outdrive and it was sold to me as just needing a head gasket....well even after 20 years in the automotive repair business...I fell for it !! The P/O had used the boat for a whole season with the crankcase full of water, it washed the bearings and caused the bearing to spin

Changed the head gasket flushed the engine and got it on the water, ran ok for the 1st trip out not great, cleaned the carbs next weekend and went out again, It ran perfect for about 1 hr and spun a rod bearing

with so much work already done I tore the engine down and the crank was in good shape and will be re ground and rod re sized new bearings

the question I have for you all is , are the bearings and piston rings , lifters for the Volvo B20 car engine from the local parts house going to work ? or do I really need Marine parts ??

"It is car specs almost all over, except for cam, valves and head gasket (plus some other parts).
So in Your case, auto parts will do.
Watch out for the bearing shell material however, be sure to get some with bronze base and not some of the cheapest lightweigt with alu base!"
