1972 270 penta outdrive and a new motor

Can anyone suggest a NEW engine that will mate with a 1972 270 penta outdrive. The current engine is an AQ-130C. I have heard that many engines will adapt with a new bell housing. Thinking about a new 130 hp mercruiser

ps i hate to do it on this classic original, mint 27 glastron!

Your existing engine/drive dictates a 2.15:1 over-all ratio.
Pretty tuff to beat one of the OHC Volvo Penta 4 bangers.
This engine uses the same ratio, and can be easily made to mate with what you have now.

With the potential of the Volvo Penta drive and cone clutch gear engagement.... going to a M/C "A" drive, w/ dog clutch gear engagement, would be a step backwards, IMO.

If you changed engines to a V-6 or V-8, yet stayed with the 270 drive, your lower unit ONLY would require that it be changed to the correct ratio.
Your upper unit can remain the same!
You will have some exhaust issues.
