This boat ran when it was put up 5 years ago. However the guy i bought it from said it started sounding like a disel, loaded it up & put in storage. My problem is, it has no spark coming from the coil. What would be the most likley cause? # 800ELSS

If you are talking about the main ignition coil (between the switchbox and the distributor) then you probably either have:

A bad coil

A bad switchbox, or

A bad stator

The coil is still available from Merc (about 185 bucks), the switchbox, which sold for almost $550 is long discontinued and out of stock and likewise the $350 stator is also discontinued/out of stock.

Personally I would start by spending 35 bucks for a Seloc's manual which will give you all the troubleshooting techniques and specs for the ignition (amoung other things).

Then go through the ignition and isolate the exact problem. Then if you can find parts (old stock or used) determine at that point if the motor is worth fixing or if you would be better served parting it out, selling off the parts and investing in something a little more modern.

It's not that it was a bad engine, it's just when it's a major chore to find a necessary part, and then you spend a fortune when you do, that can lead to "no fun" and "lots of down time"....

:D You could also put it in a box and send to me and I will dismantle it and take care of the parts for you.
However if you want to go to the bother of fixing it,invest in a couple of gallons of patience,a pair of small hands with the strength of superman and away you go.
CDI do a stator, part # 174-479, for this motor,they also do a switch box which incorporates the coil,part # 114-2986. And the rectifier,part # 154-6770.
But before you go to the bank and take out a second mortgage, take Grahams advice and do some trouble shooting.
This guy has some good video http://www.themarinedoctor.com .
Do a compression test first, 120psi cold would be nice.

Re: 1969 Merc. 800. Thunderbolt/No spark

ive got a 1979 650 merc that had no spark at the pluga and after days of checking i traced it to the key switch.sprayed contact cleaner in there and had instant spark.it is a really cheap fix if it works for you to.most people dont know that the third point on the key switch supplys the juice for spark on old boats.good luck
