'1984 Merc 80hp lower unit reinstallation

Ok I feel like a noob asking this. Here is what I assume, please tell me if I’m wrong. The Shift Cam in the lower unit, in the three positions the first or (highest point) is Forward, Second notch is neutral and lowest point being reverse. Is this Right?

I keep hearing a couple answers when putting my lower unit back together some say to have it in forward-- which it is now. And others say to have it in Neutral. Which one is it?

Last Question Can anyone explain the Reverse Cam Lock and how to install it. It has spines on it and not sure what direction is it suppose to point.

Thanks all.:)

Hi, Reverse Cam Lock is installed with the ramp on the left as you look forward from the prop.Put it in neutral, middle notch,cc is reverse, clockwise is fwd.
I usually put lwr unit in neutral and turn the flywheel a little to get the drive in.But either gear works equally well as long as the control box is in the same gear.
If you have the cables disconnected, I would put both in reverse.
The purpose of the rev cam lock is to lock down the motor in neutral and reverse. The motor could lift out of the water while reversing. When the motor is shifted into fwd it allows the lock rod down the ramp and unlocks the motor to allow the motor to lift up should you be unlucky enough to hit something in the water .
The long ramp on the shift cam is the reverse and should be on the left as you look into the lower unit

Re: '84 Merc 80hp lower unit reinstallation (HELP)

Help,

Ok i got the lower unit put back together same way i took it apart:) But When i finially installed the lower unit and ops checked it the gears dont mesh. It trys to catch in forward but does nothing when put in reverse. Am i missing something. Does anyone think my shift cam might be only half way ingauging but if so would it not go all the way into forward and not go into reverse.

Thanks

Re: '84 Merc 80hp lower unit reinstallation

Drop lwr unit again, grab shift shaft with vice grips and see if it shifts and holds the gear.If it holds the gear it's not been aligned properly. If not,bad news, you'll need to pull the bearing carrier and see what's amiss inside.

Re: '84 Merc 80hp lower unit reinstallation

You're off a spline on the cam. Try it again, but be sure to rotate all of the slack out of the LU shifter shaft by turning it CW before shoving her up there.

I found that a deep 11/32 1/4 drive socket fits perfectly over the lower unit cam shaft, and it doesn't damage it like pliers or vise-grips will.
