I just bought a 1973 6 hp John

I just bought a 1973 6 hp Johnson for my canoe. How do you tilt the motor? I've released the lock and pulled the lever with no luck. also How long should it take for it to start pumping water?

Pulled the lever? All that is required is to release the lock. If it will not tilt - it could be the Stern bracket bolt is too tight. The motor should stay anywhere in the tilt position and drift only with slight pressure. This is adjusted by the Stern bracked bolt mentioned above.

Pumping water - You should see water fairly soon. Even with the thermostat in the cold or closed position - water can still pass through the slightly open control valve so you should see water flow rather quickly.
