1988 evinrude 48 spl shift shaft

The shift shaft broke on my mo

The shift shaft broke on my motor. I have the new piece but I am unable to get it in. I have the starter out and all the bolts holding the lower cover out. do I have to pull the power head? or is there a secret to getting this in.

"Scott.... I assume that you're speaking of the horizontal shift shaft located under the bottom carburetor. Unfortunately, I don't recall ever having to replace that shaft BUT it's possible that the powerhead would require being removed if all else fails.

Yeah Joe that is the one I spe

Yeah Joe that is the one I speak of.. It is just lacking fitting by a ever so slight amount. I might try taking the lower carb off so that i can let the lower cowling to rotate a bit more. If I have to take the power head off it is only 10 bolts right
