How long does gasoline stay usable in a boat tank?

I have a Bayliner with a very clean tank that holds 75 gallons. 305 engine, with water separator filter. Generally, we keep it at half a tank, and add 25 gallons (yes, with ethanol) or so, then run it, then add more as we have money available. This fall, I poured in a 1/2 quart of blue Stabil...

Novice question about getting the boat onto a plane...

RE: 1977 heavy Bayliner Nisqually, 305 V8, 280 VP outdrive. Normally climbs up into a plane at about 24 mph, 3000 rpm What should I do to most efficiently get the boat up onto a plane? Use trim tabs? Or adjust the outdrive tilt? I normally run with the 280 completely "down".

quick question: is it weird that an exhaust mainifold Boot suddenly gets a 1/2" hole in it?

This is a quite used "project" 1989-ish 305 engine, 280 VP outdrive. I started it today, and suddenly a fair amount of smoky exhaust and water squirting in the bilge. Shut it down, got in there to look around; discover a hole right in the middle body of the starboard manifold Boot. I could...

Your thoughts: How catastrophic was my 305 engine failure?

On a scale of 1 - bad10: Very brief Scenario: First time running the (used) 305 engine. 1) Checked oil before starting, checked coolant in heat exchs. 2) Cruised us for 20 minutes at 2500 rpm- twice felt the exh Manifolds - cool enough to lay hand on. 3) Gauges -- Oil Pres, 40-45...

Only 11 volts to my starter; 2nd solendoid??

Ancient Bayliner, and 305 V8: My new starter makes a "click" for the first 2-3 key twists, then fires right up. After the juice travels from battery up to the bridge ignition, then back down to the starter I'm only getting 11 volts. Did I read somewhere to add a 2nd solenoid to kick up the...

Johnson Raw Water pump F5B-9 - seems wobbly & Off center

I just installed a new/used 305 V8, sporting a brand new crankshaft-driven Johnson f5B-9 raw water pump. My Bayliner dealer test-started the engine and thought the pump was excessively wobbling. He thought it had a wrong (or modified) supporting arm bracket on it, so he changed that out to a...

Crunched-in oil pan. Pound out, or spring for a new one?

I bought a used 305 VP engine (year, not sure) that was salvaged from a wrecked hull. Motor is exactly what I need, except that when we hoisted it out of my pick-me-up truck, and got a look under it... someone way before me had set it down/dropped? it hard enough to push in the oil pan at the...

Dumb Newbie question about Volvo Penta and chevy

Someone (not me!) crunched up the hull of their Bayliner, and settled with insurance. I just now bought the engine from that totaled boat --I saw it run, and at 100 hrs, it's tight. (I got the whole 305 red engine, the works, connected to a bell housing a cut-out section of the transom...

Have I done a dumb thing, by getting a Volva Penta engine & outtdrive?

My wife thought I needed a "project" boat, so we found an old Bayliner with a V/P 280 outdrive in reasonable condition (clear gear oil, new-looking propeller, a little white junk/corrosion in the water hose. The 23' boat is great (for $1500 with new trailer), But it certainly has no...

    V/P 280 outdrive oil change (1978) - I've done mercs... but this... I dunno.

I'm sort of embarrassed to even axe this, but I haven't found an answer anywhere. Drain plug is at the bottom/front. but the top level plug is where? ( I can answer that on a merc.) Also, I know my oil checking dipstick plug is supposed to be up on the tippy top, but my plug only has a 1/4"...

Well, I've gotta axe... fuel/water separator -- if one is good...

... if one is good, is two in a row super ultra fantastic? Wonder if I'd start getting into fuel pressure issues? Gracias.

Well, I gotta ask... Getting dead gasoline outta the tank... Bayliner

1978 Bayliner Nisqually on a trailer -- anyone with a good idea on getting that stuff outta there? That juice is prolly 3 years old. My only thought is to open the sending unit access, slide in an old garden hose, get on the ground and suck -- I don't own a transfer pump. Any secret...

Recommendations for Adhesives & sealants for boating.

First time post guy here. I'm normally a dry land 5th wheel RV-er, which has its own types of caulks and sealers, (butyl tapes, lap sealants) But I just bought a 40-year old Bayliner Nisqually, and I'm wondering about the types of marine sealant goo I should use, and where. For example, I...
