    Keep breaking rings...

Hey all, I rebuilt my 1990 90hp 2 or 3 seasons ago, and broke a ring at the beginning of the second season on the overhaul. I rebuilt again, different pistons and rings. The thought was maybe I broke a ring on the install. Ran on the second rebuild for a season, and another ring broke in the...

1990 90hp, broken ring after overhaul

Morning all, Rebuilt my engine at the start of last season. Engine shop bored 030, new everything except con rods and crank. WSM pistons. Carb kits, proper break in, idle and WOT timing set. Boat ran great all year.(or so I though) Last night I fired it up to get it ready to go in the slip...

    Prop nut flat washer

Hey guys, 1990 90hp First off, thanks to all for the help with the rebuild. Break in finished this weekend. Much appreciated. I have 2 different props we use depending on what we're using the boat for, and today while changing I dropped a flat washer into the water at the marina. Jumped online...

    Break in of rebuild

Is the verdict 25-1 for the break in period? Manual specifies to add 50-1 to tank if VRO is equipped, but doesn't say what to run if not. Researching this has me all over the place.. Thanks

    Gel seal

Hey guys, Not sure if the link is gonna work but if it does is this good for the gel seal path on the crankcase? Used a marker to show where I think I should be running it. Again, did a bunch of reading and have the manual opened up in front of me but not 100% sure. Thanks...

    Crank seal rings

Any reason to replace the crank seal rings during a rebuild if they measure within spec and aren't broken? Is it common practice while it's apart? Did some research and pulled up a few old threads on this but still uncertain. Cost isn't an issue, just wondering if the "if it ain't broken don't...

    Machine shop quote

It just me or does $350 sound a little high to bore a stripped down Johnson V4 block? Been many years since I had any of this work done but it kinda caught me off guard. I'm in the trades and I certainly appreciate the skill involved but just wanted a few other opinions from guys that do this...

    Which pistons?

Hey guys, Quick easy one for you. Getting ready to rebuild a 1990 90hp. Would you recommend going with Wiseco pistons or the OMC brand? Thanks

    Water separator

Hey all, Getting ready to install a 90gph Sierra marine water separator on my 90hp carb'd Johnson. (boat has built in tank, and is wet slipped all season) Started doing some reading and came across a few things indicating it may create a restriction in the fuel system. What is the general...

    Aluminum hull care

Hey all, I recently purchased my first aluminum hull boat, a crestliner phantom 175, and for the first time will be keeping it in the water at a marina. My other boats have been fiberglass and always on a trailer or stored in a hoist. I've been doing some reading about anodes, and was wondering...

    1990 90hp reg/rect question

Hey guys, Quick, stupid question, but have to make sure... I recently replaced my water cooled reg/rectifier as it was not charging. I now have good voltage output, but still no tach operation. I followed Joe's method and when I connect yellow/grey wire to tach grey wire, the tach functions...
