"Hi guys (couple of newbies here), we have a Volvo PentaAQ131A - is there a comparable Volvo car engine?
Also our alternator is not charging, the previous owner told us to flick a wire from the main starter lead to a pin on the back of the alternator, whereby it charges. However we feel we are bypassing a black 'resistor?' but aren't confident to make a permanent cut - Can anyone explain what this is and the proper course of action? thanks, gerry"

"Gerry,

The AQ131 is a B23 block. Search for it on Google or autoparts sites.

You probably have a brushless SEV Marchal alternator installed (or a Valeo or Paris Rhone). The wire to the alternator excitation should come from the (+) of the coil and shoud go through a resistor to the pin in the back of the alternator. Problems with the alternator regulator are not uncommon, in which case it is sometimes cheaper to replace the current alternator for a Delco (I have a single wire Delco alternator installed)."

"$400 for a new wire or for a new alternator?

If the SEV Marchal alternator fails (or the Valeo, etc), there are cheaper alternatives than replacing it with original equipment. Check this thread and also the link to a replacement alternator.
