"88 Baja gets stuck in forward

"88 Baja gets stuck in forward,have to really pull to get into reverse. It has a 454 with bravo 1. A friend told me the interrupter is missing causing the problem.I just bought this boat,looks like a lot of things have been altered.Any thoughts?

What are your idle rpms in gear and in neutral?

When was your gear lube changed last?

What gear lube is in it? Should be merc hiperformance. ( greenish blue in color)

Base on the year I would say it may be the upper cone clutch/gear assembly. cone clutch and shift linkage is worn/carroded.

This issue will take some investigation from someone with REAL knowledge of bravo 1 outdrives and not someone who "thinks" they may know.
 
"Boat was just winterized,had

"Boat was just winterized,had new fluids at start of season(only went out twice for about 4 hours total).I was having some tachometer problems so I am guessing at best on the RPM`s.I am going to pull the drive off to check a few things any way,I will bring it to local shop and have it checked out.
