When the operator neither pushes nor pulls the tiller handle (changing steering course), the hydraulic valve closes eliminating the steering load from propeller torque on the tiller handle. The operator MUST maintain a firm grip on the tiller handle under ALL operating conditions; while actively changing course or while maintaining a fixed course (with valve closed) as sea conditions, floating debris, or other conditions could change the steering course without input directly from the operator.
