"I have a 1984 Sea Ray with 270hp Crusaders and I will be going out this winter in the Seattle area but not as much as summer. The weeks I do not go out I have been starting the engines once or twice a week, is this good for the engines with high hours??"

"And NOT resarting them all fr

"And NOT resarting them all freakin' winter is better still! Remember the "little olde lady who only drove to church on Sunday"? I wouldn't want the motor out of THAT car!

The bottom line: If you don't intend going somewhere withthe boat, DO NOT start the motors! The moisture it will generate in the oil can not be burnt off just sitting there, even at full temperature.

"I would like to re-visit this

"I would like to re-visit this question. I see 2 opposing views, one by a MOBILE MASTER CERTIFIED MARINE TECHNICIAN who says running is better than sitting all winter. Personally, I would feel much better jumping on a aboat and taking it out in early spring that has been run every week, even if just long enough to bring the temps. up, then jumping on a boat that has been sitting all winter. But, I'm not an expert. How does anyone else feel about this ?

This guy has just shown how little he knows about marine engines or any engine for that matter. Allowing any engine, but especially a marine engine to just sit all winter, unless properly and FULLY winterized, is the worse thing you can do. These engines are made to run and run and run and not sit idle in the cold. Seals dry out and crack, fluids separate and isolate compounds, metals exfoliate when exposed to air for extended periods, carbon based protectorants break down when not mixed from time to time, rubber and neoprine gaskets crack and crumble if allowed to completely dry out; and the list goes on. The best thing you can do for your engine over the winter is to run it, even if only for 10 or 15 mins. RUN IT.
