What size zincs?

Hi folks!
New guy here. Glad I found this great forum. I've tried the search and could not find the length of the zincs for a 1988 Crusader 350. This is the 454 block. I found some 1/2" x 2" long at WM. Will these work for the heat exchanger zincs? Boat is new to me but looks like PO did not change them as there is only an 1/8" nub there now.

Welcome to ME.com, Mike!

That's not good...glad you understand maintenance. You will find a short ton of helpful hints on this board.

What you want are camp E-1 zincs for the HX and E-0's for the oil coolers...and don't be surprised if the oil coolers need to be cleaned due to the PO's lack of attention. If you have the good brass hex head pipe plugs holding the zincs, you can buy just the replacement zinc 'pencils' and save a fair chuck of cash (like a 4x factor). I found having an extra set allowed keeping ready to go spares so there was NO reson not to change them every month. You can clean out the old pipe plugs on a blow day or at home after dinner if the old zinc remnants don't unscrew.

Mark, thanks for the info. Yes these are brass hex head pipe plugs but I don't think there is enough to grab to unscrew. Could I use a small drill and get them out that way? I'm changing the hoses out also and when I removed them from the oil coolers the coolers appear to be newer than the motors....maybe I got lucky?

I have several pencil zincs and a couple of spare heads they screw into. When I remove one and it is very short, I drop it into a small bucket of muriatic acid, this dissolves the old zinc completely and I can reuse the hex head later. My boat is in the water all year and I get somewhere from 3 to 4 months before they need replacing. The outer zincs on the shafts and rudders last about 6 months.

Guys...thanks for the info. I actually just ordered a new set with the heads and some pencils as spares. Needed shaft zincs and a new hull zinc also. I'm really glad to have found this forum. This is our first real boat. We have always had trailerable stuff before so I'm really doing a lot of reading these days. I will try the propane torch to clean these heads out.
