"Hi, I'm thinking of playing it extra safe and buying a backup outboard engine for a Searay 18ft bowrider 1989. I'll be using it in the sea and I'm trying to decide what horsepower it should be should the 4.3L mercruiser pack up and I need to get home. Obviously I would need to make up a bracket to attach this etc. Thanks"

Good question, it depends on how fast you want to get home and how far to sea are you going to go.
You will probably be governed by the rating on the outboard mounting bracket to around 15hp.

Personaly I think I would just make sure that my main engine was in good order all the time and spend a few hundred dollars on a good quality marine radio (which anybody who go's to sea should have) and use it to call for help if required.

"I strongly agree with Jeff. Sea Tow is the cheapest security you can have. However, where I go is refered as the "Graveyard of the pacific". A small kicker just enaugh to keep you off the rocks, bouys, and general places you dont want to be is nice while waiting for Sea Tow to arrive."

One of my boating buddies has a 10 hp "kicker" on his 28 foot inboard (for trolling). Moves the boat 4 to 5 mph without strain.

Hope that helps.

"If you get a 4 cycle engine,

"If you get a 4 cycle engine, you'll always have a fresh fuel supply available. You'll need a fuel valve setup to divert the fuel to the outboard. If you use a connecting rod to the main OD you can steer from the helm but it may be tight since there is not power steering."
