Hi. Can someone tell me if this is a Gen 1 or Gen 2 Alpha outdrive?

Mercruiser (R / Mr Alpha One Sterndrive) Engine Components

That is what the book says. There was a brief period of time where a "R" unit was built. It's guts were like that of the '82 & earlier but externally it looked like an "MR"/Alpha gen1.

What year is the boat?

It's an 88 Carlson Glastron CV 23, with a 5.7 carbed motor

1988- Alpha One Gen 1

OC prefix also fits.

MR (earlier) and Alpha are 100% identical with the exception of the lower unit vertical drive shaft. MR has an oring grove near splines at top.

R drive (prior to MR) had a few differences including the way the lower unit vertical drive shaft bearing was installed, the opposite of the MR and Alpha.

Thanks for the information. That means the water pump kit I ordered will fit this drive.

our host here has a search by serial for merc drives and engines -

that ensures you will get the right parts for your application. They usually have both aftermarket and OEM options. Typically getting OEM impellers is worth the cost as they last longer

I did go through the host site, but I could not find a listing for the water pump kit. I did find a Sierra water pump kit on Amazon, which I ordered. The part number for the kit is 18-3320. Also, being in Canada means that I face longer delivery times for parts ordered from Marine Engine, as well as higher delivery charges.

For anyone else wondering , the early drives MC1 R MR use 2 side nuts, 2 bottom nuts and 1 nut in the front.
GEN II drives use 4 side bolts and nuts and 1 from bolt "usually

Post #2 was taken directly from the search by S/N.
Mercruiser was so kind as to lump all 3 drives together. Need to see the top of the driveshaft to determine what is inside.

Based on the year of the boat 1988. It ia impossible the drive could be an R drive.
Unless someone installed an older drive on a newer boat

My research showed Serial number match boat year of 1988
ALPHA ONE GEN 1.

NOT MR and NOT R
