"I want to get a new winch for my 1973 19 foot Olympic brand V-hull with a 165 straight six. My present winch has a 5/32" or 3/16" wrinkled up cable that gives me fits. I saw this nice one at Wal-Mart that has the flat strap and was had a 1500 lb. rating. My question is: Do I need a heavier one for my boat? I would be fairly sure my boat weighs more than 1500 lbs. But in reality, when you are pulling with the winch, the boat is in the water and when it is on the trailer the winch is not really holding much 'cause it is down on the trailer and the rear straps are holding it down. I don't have any recorded data on the weight of the boat. What do you guys think?
