"I recently purchased a 1995 bass tracker with a 40hp Mercury o/b..... I just changed the lower unit gear lube and it was 100% cream/tan in color and dripped out like glue.... does that mean it is water leaking in lower unit or could it be that the prior Gear lube was mixed with assembly lubricant?? (Special Lube 101 or 2-4-C w/Teflon) How can you tell the differance????

I was trying to get a few more fishing days in b4 winterizing, but I do not want to cause any damage..... does this sound like a serious problem????

also, when I took off the fill and drain screws there were NO gaskets/washers on them, is there supposed to be?

thanks"

About the missing gasket on the drain screw....I found the same thing on my 25 Merc. I changed the lower oil and placed the screws back in and wiped it clean..in a few minutes I noticed that it was leaking from the bottom screw. I know it was tight so I took it out again...cleaned/inspected it..no gasket. Ssoooo I was just going fishing and needed a quick fix. I put a few wraps of Teflon tape behind the head of the plug and put in back in. NO leaks....works for me until I can get to the shop for a new gasket.

"always install new gaskets, they often draw water in at that point. Change fluid, run, check again for water. Tan is ok. Look down the list for a bad lower unit and water intrusion. can always have lower unit pressure tested during the winter at a local shop."
