"Hi, I recently bought a Volvo Penta 4.3l in a 1999 Katana boat. It runs great and has for the past 3 runs, but yesterday while it was idling it started making a "ringing" noise. Sounded like it was coming from the belts or alternator area. It continued to do it the rest of the day, not affecting performace. Do you know what the problem is?"

"Thanks for the response! I checked the Alternator belt and it seemed ok. I tightened it even more (as much as I could). I went out on the water today and the noise is still there. I noticed that the other belt that is on the pulley is more loose than the alternator belt. Not sure how to tighten that one as it is on 2 pulleys. It sounds squeeky and ringy. Yesterday it cut out for a little bit then cameback. Should I just take it in, and does it sound serious?"

I guess you must have power steering installed. The second belt adjustment should be done by moving the pump (you will have to loosen the pump first).

"I noticed now that the steering is difficult when accelerating. Since I just got the boat it is hard to say wether it was in the first place or not, but could this mean that my power steering is shot then since that noise is happening and I am using strong arm steering? Is this an expensive job?"

"The belt may be slipping during acceleration, when the steering torque needs to be significantly higher than at idle. Before reaching any conclusions, I suggest that you should first eliminate the potential of the belt slipping by either tightening it or using some belt dresser. Afterwards, you can act depending of the results you have observed."

"Thanks, for all the help on this El Pescador. I found out that the leak of the powers steering fluid was coming out from where the pulley is connected to the pump. Apparently a seal is gone and I will need a new pump. I'm just getting prices on those now. Just out of curiousity do you know roughly what I will be paying for a 1999 Volvo Penta 4.3L GL power steering pump?
thanks for all your help,

JEROD"
