Volvo Penta 1999 3.0L GS backfiring through Carb

So I recently had the cap and rotor replaced on my 99' volvo penta 3.0gs after it burned out last week. Since its been replaced I've been experiencing problems once the engine is warmed up and running at speed. Everything starts, idles and runs great for the first 30mins or so until the engine is warm. Once warm at around 180 degrees and running at 3100rpm it starts backfiring out of the carb and runs slightly hot (coolant starts draining out overflow). If popped into neural and revved to the same rpms the the engine temp drops to around 160 degrees and no backfiring occurs. Everything runs fine at lower speeds/rpm but once up on plane at speed (3000 rpm's+)
its backfires every 20secs or so. I pulled the carb apart and cleaned out the primary fuel jets and the filter within the fuel bowl. blew the fuel lines out. problem still there. I'm think possibly a timing or vacuum issue?
Any help greatly appreciated!
