I have a 1977 Omega 280 with an AQ120 4cyl engine. My question is the 280 capable to hold a v6 or v8? I had taken the boat to a retired man that once worked for Omega and then started his own repair business to build me a bimi top. He told me the boat was probably ordered with that engine and the factory just plugged in the 120. He also said the 280 was used for the v8's. True?
That is very true. This could be a 270, 275 or 280.
However, the lower unit ratio changes for the V-8 (transmission ratio remains the same).
4 cylinder is 2.15:1.... and the V-8 must be 1.61:1...
NO substitutes.... or it will not work.
The transom shield is also different for the V-8 exhaust Y-pipe unless you can find a good used AQ 200B or AQ225B Y-pipe.
"B" being the key factor here.
The difference is in the single exhaust relief -vs- the V-8 double relief found after the AQ200-225B.
All 4 cylinder transom shields are single relief.
The B Y-pipe will work with the 4 cylinder single relief transom shield.
Otherwise you'll need to find a double relief transom shield $$$$$$$ and AQ 260 style 95mm Y-pipe.
The exhaust will now be 3" with Barr universal mans/risers, instead of the AQ260 95mm risers........, but it will work.
