Trim fluid leaking out water intake ports

I have a 1981 SE106 sterndrive engineering outdrive. I just bought it. I put a new water pump in it and filled it with new gear oil, which is green in color.
My trim doesn’t seem to work well. Goes up ok, goes down very slow.
I noticed I have trim fluid leaking out of the water intake ports.
What’s causing this and how is it even possible??!!
