Tickover and smoke

I have a 1995 Johnson 6 with very low hours , cleaned the carb three times, poked guitar strings down the tiny holes and jets and got fresh petrol. Done a compression test and changed plugs. It starts and runs but doesnt like low revs and tickover , it also smokes quite a bit even with no choke. Any ideas ? the only thing i have noticed is a slight pitting on the end of the mixture screw (point) how many turns back from fully in should the mixture screw be as a starting point. Have you done a spark test to make sure you have good fire to each plug? You might have weak spark on one of the cylinders and that's causing your poor idle and excess smoke.

Do a cylinder drop test on it. That may tell you something.

When the motor is acting up, pull one spark plug lead at a time and note the changes in the motor.
