Tachometer to ignition coil

Just bought a 2002 deck boat with a 1998 305 CID 5.0L with Thunderbolt V. Tach not working. Connections on back OK. I noticed that there is only one grey wire on negative terminal of ignition coil. Manual says should be 2; one to tach and one from the ignition module. No evidence broken wire.

1. Any harm me running a test wire from coil to tach? Could the wire have been removed for some good reason?
2. Any chance the two grey wires are spliced somewhere hence only one on the coil?
3. Could try to find a test tach, but #1 would be a lot quicker.

Anybadvice appreciated.

No harm in doing this just remove existing wire on back of tach fiirst

Very possible in fact the factory manual schematic is kind of drawn to suggest that

Also look at back of tach, there should be a selector switch for 4, 6 , 8 cylinders. Sometimes moving from one back to the correct one may work.
