Hello.. I have a 1969 Evinrude

Hello.. I have a 1969 Evinrude lark 40 horse electric shift with the generator. My boat has an Airguide tach in the dash. If I can make use of it with this motor I'd like to.. Will that tach work with the motor I have ?? if yes What two wires would I connect the tach to ?

Thank you

Clancy

"Clancy, is the tach "vint

"Clancy, is the tach "vintage" as well? I have seen old tach's that have a "pick-up" that you just wrap around a plug wire.

If you can pull the tach it may say on the back what the (inputs) are...."

"Hello Graham,, Thank you for

"Hello Graham,, Thank you for responding.. The boat is a "74" model.. I assume the tach is original equiptment. I checked the back of it.
it reads. 4 GD and the wires are a sorta lime green and black.. Is that of any help ??

Thanks again

Clancy"

"Clarence, from what I can fin

"Clarence, from what I can find on old airguide tachs (2 wire version), the black wire should be grounded to the engine block and your other wire hooks to the points (but I can't get a more specific answer than that).

I suggest you try getting ahold of Joe Reeves (on this site) - he has been an OMC tech for years and may know exactly where your other wire hooks up..."

"The cut out switch mentioned

"The cut out switch mentioned above is the small component located on the port side (left as you would be standing in back of the engine, facing the spark plugs) of the engine that has a small vacuum hose attached to it, a couple wires attached to the nut in the center of it, and possible another wire attached elsewhere.

The wires attached to the center of it..... one leads to one set of points. The other leads to one of the "M" terminals of the ignition switch. Use a ohm meter to find out which "M" terminal that wire leads to.

When you have determined which "M" terminal the wire from the cutout switch leads to, connect the green wire there. In effect, this would be the same as connecting that green wire to the center nut wiring of the cutout switch.

Those old magneto type tachometers operated off of one set of points. Hopefully it works for you."
