Tachometer hookup

I just recently purchased a 2004 merc 40 3 hole and I’m trying to hook a faria tach up to it but I’m at a stand still because I cannot seem to get a straight answer on what wire to hook the tach signal wire up too. Everyone is telling me the grey wire, which isn’t wrong if you have elect start. But I do not have elect start and so I don’t have the grey wire coming out of the voltage regulator. Is there another wire I can use to tap into? Thanks in advance

I just did my 50hp 2007. If you have a side control there is a wiring harness that plugs into it for installing a tack. It is a 1/2 round plug that hangs from the stern side. Quicksilver Tach harness 84-86396A8

Any of the yellow wires coming from the stator will work then set the switch on the back of the tach to 6 make sure the switch is locked into place. You need to push in on the switch to turn it make sure it ppps back out.

Without a serial number you should have two yellows a red a black and a grey the wire that isnt black, red or yellow should be the tach wire?

Serial number is 0T810908. And it’s got 2 yellow wires coming out of the stator to the area where the coils are. I’m not sure about the red I’ll have to double check when I get home
