"I have a 78 240hp omc stringer 800 mechanical shift. everything shifts great on land and all testing under power, but when in the water, when things warm up(it seems) it doesnt shift right, and i have to readjust at the control box. then it works good for a while, its still warm, and i have to readjust again. what could be causing this to happen? very confused!! Thanks.."

"I have a simular problem with mine an 84 stringer 800 mechanical, what it ended up being was that someone had changed from a points ignition to electronic. with this the shift interupters no longer worked, would shift great on land but soon as it was in the water it required force to go from forward to reverse"

"The shifter doesnt need any f

"The shifter doesnt need any force, its like something metal warms up and makes the cable longer, or shorter when heated up. But I thank you for your input. Any other suggestions? Thanks."

"1978 was a hydromechanical year, not full mechanical. Was the conversion done?"

"yes it is hydro.. can you jus

"yes it is hydro.. can you just replace the hydro with a new mechanical shift rod? or is there other things that need to be replaced.. I talked to a mechanic and he said that the 351 is too much power for those hydro mechanical shifts, and to change to mechanical.. thanks for the help.."

"power has nothing to do with

"power has nothing to do with it. Once it's in gear, it's in gear. The gears are basically the same in the mechanical units. All the hydro-assist does is shift. be careful with that mechanic, his ignorance is showing....the problem with hydromechanicals is their unforgiving response to water intrusion... the shift assist plunger likes to jam up. I wonder if your lower unit oil is foaming up. That will make it not want to shift when it gets hot...aerated oil compresses, so the pump in the lower will not actuate the assist cylinder positively. Maybe try different gear oil. Don't suppose this all began after a lower unit lube change?
To swap to mechanical, you need a mechanical lower unit (complete, with shift cable), then you will also need to change the shift converter box behind the engine and add an electronic shift assist system. If you end up needing a hydro-mech lower, let me know, I have a low hour unit."

"No water is getting in the oi

"No water is getting in the oil. it did this before the gear lube change also.. I can get another hydro lower unit for $350 but he says you might have the same problem(this is not the same mechanic, this is a parts person that says this happens on alot of these.)What do you think? do you think it will work? can you beat this guys price? thanks for the input, this thing is driving me crazy.."
