"I'm with Jeff - a full qt of oil is toooo much. the modern fogging oils are much more effective, too. All I can offer one clarification and one addition to Jeff's plan... check for spark with the coil wire held close to ground (call it 3A, if you will). An alternative is to use a spark gap tester. The "add" would be 1A - place oil absorbing material at spark plug holes.

On your distributors, the points are ok but are mainenance items. Another often overlooked item is the advance mechanism. This is the spring and weight mechanism that adjusts your ignition timing. It usually won't mess with the spark quality but will change 'when' it occurs.

The other items to check are the ballast resistor and the ignition coil itself. Since you have a running set on the starboard, you can use it to swap parts until you find the one underperforming.

Make sure you gap those points ocrrectly as this will impact the quality of the spark. Best done with a dwell meter vs feeler gauges.

You may also need to check the switch and harness if they are original...even marine grade stuff deteriorates given enough time."
