Starting problems with an 87b Evinrude 175

" When I turn the key to start the 87' Evinrude 175, I get the tone at the console and sometimes the motor turns over and other times nothing. The problem is getting worse. Batteries and connections are good.

Where should I start to look? "

"Bill.... Many times I've found connections that look and seem tight and proper, but they aren't. If you haven't already, remove the battery cables from the battery, then wire brush them (whatever) and the battery terminals, making absolutely sure that they're clean. Another area to check is the battery side of the starter solenoid. Remove those connections and clean them thoroughly as that is the power takeoff area leading to the ignition switch. If that connection isn't proper, you'll have a voltage drop to the "B" term of the switch.... and a like voltage drop to the starter via that same solenoid.
