Starter problem

I am taking a 350 crusader out

I am taking a 350 crusader out of a 6 year nap and can't get the starter to engage. The engine is tight but will turn over with a wrench. The starter tries to engage and may nudge the crank shaft but then just grinds. I checked the fly wheel and she is fine (for now) and even replaced the starter but got the same results. The battery started the opposite engine and the ground looks good. I'm out of ideas.

"I'd start by pulling all the plugs, squirting some light oil in each cylinder and then seeing how it turns over, by hand. I'd be surprised if there isn't a fair amount of rust on the cylinder walls. If the rust is present, its not going to help your rings any.

I'd also check both ends of all the battery cables - for being clean and tight.

I'd also be surprised if the fuel was in good shape...stabilizer is only good for a few months - same for fogging oil.

"And spin it over with the plugs out. Most likely, the rings and cylinder walls are badly rusted, so it'll will burn oil like crazy.

At this point I was hoping to spin some oil up thru her by getting the starter to spin her a little faster, that seemed to help the other motor quite a bit. Since the starter will not engage I'm stuck just doing it by hand a half rotation at a time. Is it normal for the starter to act this way?"

The starter probably needs some lubrication--it too has been sitting a loooong time. A rebuild would be a good idea here.

You can pull the distributor a

You can pull the distributor and insert an oil pumper primer tool to 'prime' the oil galleies. May be able to rent one from a tool rental shop if you can't borrow one. Good idea to mark the distributor before you pull it to make its replacement easier.
