starter gear not engaging with flywheel

1997 Force 75 2-stroke. the starter gear shaft raises when the key is turned to "on" position, but does not raise high enough to mesh with flywheel. Why? What part(s) do I need for repair?

No parts needed other than some grease.
The bendix: under it is a worm gear that raises the bendix to engage the flywheel.
Over time the gear gets dry and needs some lube.
A light grease like white lithium works well.
Be careful, just a little grease is needed. Too much will destroy the bendix.
It has a rubber hub(like the props hub) that will go bad if it gets lubed too much.
The battery can affect it also. A low charge will make it do the same.
Get a battery load tester. 25$ Harbor freight.
