Replacing water intake screen.

Hey guys. I’m doing a couple of winter projects and one is the replace the water intake screens. Any idea how to remove this cap? (Pic). It appears to cover a bearing assembly or something. Looks like I AJ e to get it out to remove the screen.

That is not a "cap", it is the bearing housing. And if I remember correctly, yes on that model it has to be removed to get the screen out.
 
There is nothing holding it in there except an o-ring. Well, possibly a bit of corrosion and sealant also. Try clamping something to the drive shaft so you can pull/pry the shaft upward. It might move far enough to break the bearing housing loose. No, you cannot pull the shaft out that way.

Another option might be to tap threads in the holes and screw some bolts in to pull with. Needless to say, don't run the tap down into the existing threaded holes below the housing. (Use a bottoming tap)
 
BTW, once you get that bearing housing out, there is nothing supporting the drive shaft except the pinion bearing at the bottom. Putting a lot of sideways force on the shaft, like picking the lower unit up by the shaft, can impart a lot of stress on the pinion bearing.

Finally, there is no better time to replace the drive shaft seal than now, while you have it apart. Clean up the shaft before proceeding.

Just 2 hefty screwdrives is all it takes to remove that cover.---Note , I believe cover is to be installed one way.-----Marked with " front " on the bearing housing.
 
Just following up to say I was finally able to get back to my project. The cover eventually came off with a little bit of force. Thanks again for your patience with this rookie. :D I may be back on again soon as I try to reconnect the shift linkage. ;)

Just wanted to pop in and say thank you again for the tips. I believe that I have her all put back together properly, however living in Alberta, I have not means to testing it until later in the spring. Shifting seems fine....mechanically speaking. What bugger getting that little pin in the shifting rod though. lol.
 
Not sure how you could have trouble installing the pin.----And hopefully you have not turned the shift rod.----Where in Alberta ?-----At this time I hope to be in Alberta late summer this year , depending on travel restrictions.---Be on Burntstick Lake and going very fast with an ---Action Marine 17----Building it for the grand kids.
