To do a complete short shift cable replacement in order to replace the cable bellows requires a bit of effort and at least one special tool (very deep six point 9/16" Socket).
Ayuh,.... With the new replacement cables, the little white plastic tube, on the aft end, Unscrews for installation,......
So the extra long 9/16" socket is no longer necessary,.....
How many posts will be received with shifting problems because the boat owner forgot to reinstall plastic tube or didnt tighten it properly and it loosened up.
Someone could sacrifice a deep 9/16" socket (or the Merc tool) by filing the flats a bit, to allow the socket to fit the galled nut by tapping it on, then turning the socket. The socket would need a nut welded to it in order to be able to turn is since it passes over the shift cable.I know this thread is 3 years old. The shift cable jacket nut at outdrive end was completely galled in place and previous owner cross threaded it. Should anyone be wondering, the required tap to clean up the mess is a 1/4"x 18 npt. Commonly used for 1/4" pipe, the tap is tapered and measures +/- 1/2" outside dimension. The 1/4" nomenclature refers to the pipe for which it is intended to be used. Perhaps you all know this...I didn't. Hope this helps someone. Use tef-gel on install to prevent corrosive bonding.
